Confession: I only reread the book because the movie came out. But I am so glad I did because this book is amazing and I did not appreciate it enough when I read it in 8th grade to please my Dad. (by the way happy birthday S/O to my pop- he is 42 today)
Ender's Game is actually kind of depressing and though it leaves you feeling awed, you are kind of happy when it ends. I disliked all the the main characters. None of them were a hero. Not even Ender. With Ender I love him because I understand him, and because he is so deceived by the system- I sympathize. Heck even his genetics are screwed with by IF. Though he is a killer and so logical that it is mildly disturbing (I have to hurt them so much that they wont hurt me again- oops dead), he does have some redeeming qualities. He doesn't want to hurt people and he loves people in kind of a twisted logical sort of way. The ending with the Bugger sack of eggs helped too.
Valentine. Ugh. I don't like her! She is one of those characters you are supposed to like but I kind of despised her for the same reasons she despised herself- she caved to Peter. She worked with him and did what he said and then did what IF told her to when it came to Ender- manipulating him just like everyone else. I felt like she betrayed him when she talked to him when the IF was involved. I guess in the end she is good. She and Ender don't destroy any other species so that's nice.
Peter. I hate it. I hate that he got exactly what he wanted. That in the end, the demented little boy that skinned squirrels ruled the world. I hate that you want to almost like him when he and Valentine are working together.
